Master Sergeant David Johnson is from Virginia and Maine. He graduated from Poland Spring High School in Poland Spring, Maine. He attended Infantry OSUT in Fort Benning, Georgia, and enlisted in the U.S. Army as an indirect fire infantryman (11C) in July 2005.
Upon completing training, Johnson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, then the 2nd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson, Colorado. He participated in two combat deployments to Iraq, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom as an ammo bearer, assistant gunner, team leader, and squad leader.
He was reassigned to 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he deployed to Afghanistan as a mortar section sergeant in support of Special Operation Task Force South. He then volunteered to attend the United States Army Drill Sergeant School in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was assigned as a drill sergeant at 1-13 Infantry Regiment, then to 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment in Fort Drum, New York, as a mortar platoon sergeant. He also served as the rear detachment first sergeant during the unit’s deployment mission to Kosovo.
He assumed his current role as the senior military science instructor at the University of Richmond in October 2019. He serves as an instructor for the program’s ROTC cadets, overseeing the development of their leadership attributes and competencies.
