Major Mark A. Axtell was assigned to the University of Richmond Spider Battalion in September 2020 as Professor of Military Science, and Department Chair of the Military Science and Leadership program in the School of Arts and Sciences.

MAJ Axtell, a native of Ithaca, New York attended the State University of New York College of Science and Forestry and was awarded an Army ROTC Scholarship through Syracuse University. In 2003, he earned an Associate in Applied Science in Forest Technology. In 2005, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management and was commissioned into the Army Aviation branch.

After qualifying as a UH-60 Blackhawk Pilot and graduating the Aviation Officer Basic Course at Fort Rucker, Alabama in 2006, MAJ Axtell was assigned to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), 3rd Infantry Division at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah Georgia. While there he served and deployed with the 2nd and 4th Battalions (BN) to Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2010 respectively. While there he held the positions of Company (Co.) Executive Officer, Maintenance Platoon Leader, BN Logistics Officer, and Assistant BN Operations Officer.

After graduating Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Fort Benning Georgia in 2012, MAJ Axtell took command of A Co. (Flight), 2nd BN, 10th CAB, 10th Mountain Infantry Division, Fort Drum, New York and deployed to Afghanistan. Upon redeployment, MAJ Axtell took a second command of D Co. (Helicopter Maintenance), 2nd BN, 10th CAB. In 2015, MAJ Axtell was promoted to MAJ and attended the resident course at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon graduation and earning a Master’s in Management and Leadership from Webster University in 2016, he was assigned to the 1st Aviation Brigade in Fort Rucker ALs the 1-145th Aviation Regiment responsible for the initial and midlevel professional training for all Army Aviators. In 2018, he was selected as the BDE Operations Officer. Before arriving at the Spider Battalion, MAJ Axtell commanded the Aviation Company in Sinai, Egypt as part of the Multi-national Forces and Observers organization facilitating the lasting peace between Israel and Egypt.
