Lieutenant Colonel Richard D. Gillem, Jr. has served as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Richmond since July 2005. LTC Gillem received his commission from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1988. He is a Field Artillery officer who served in the 82d Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the 2d Infantry Division in Korea. He received his Masters of Business Administration Degree from the University of Alabama and is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Most recently he served with the 82nd Airborne as Battalion Operations Officer and Executive Officer for 1st Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment in Iraq and Brigade Fire Support Officer for the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan.  His last posting prior to joining the Spider Battalion ROTC program was as the Director, G3 Plans and Exercises in 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 

LTC Gillem is an honor graduate from the US Army Ranger School and has earned the Combat Action Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and German Airborne Wings. He has been awarded 3 Bronze Stars, 3 Meritorious Service Medals and an Air Medal.  He has served in combat with the 82d Airborne Division from the platoon to brigade level to include: Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom (Kandahar, Khowst); and two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom (Fallujah, Kuwait).  LTC Gillem is married with four children.
